His opposing characters, Dr. Miller and his wife Janet, are a representation of the rising African American class trying to make strides toward integrating into this white society while resisting white supremacy. This representation of extreme white supremacy prohibits Chesnutt’s main African-American characters, Dr. Miller and his wife Janet, from being able to integrate into society at the end of the story and leaves the readers conflicted on a probable solution to his posed problem. Chesnutt’s novel does not succeed at proposing a solution to integrating African Americ ans because he has created a corrupt white supremacy society that leaves no room for progress or assimilation. The African American community in The Marrow of Tradition expresses a great deal of sorrow and grief toward their maltreatment from white society. Yet, most are willing to overlook that and move forward into a more progressive era. Of course, supreme white society does not reciprocate these feelings. On the contrary, Chesnutt depicts a meeting between General Belmont, Captain McBane, and Mr. Carteret coming together and toasting to, â€Å"No nigger domination,† and, â€Å"White Supremacy everywhere†¦Now and forever,† in response to African Americans taking local office and having the right to vote (67, 68). Furthermore, the treatment of Sandy by Captain McBane is evident proof that he will never be able to see an African American as his equal in society. Before the war, Captain McBane was considered a part of the poor-white class and he was able to profit from the war more than slaves. He is a character that shows no mercy towards this idea of integration in how he treats Sandy. He throws money at him, is physically violent with him, and even insults his qualities as a gentleman. Sandy, representing a class of African Americans who still continue a line of work for their master’s families, takes this treatment as if he has no other choice even though he is no longer a slave. This one scene represents the struggle for integration into this supreme white society. Chesnutt has created these stereotypes in each of his characters that give them the harsh reality of the reader’s society. It would never be possible for McBane, resentful of his origins and makes a point of his authority at the expense of those below him, to accept a man like Sandy as his equal in society. From this particular scene, it is evident to readers that integration would not be possible with a mindset of white supremacy infecting society. Another example of an African American character wanting acceptance and recognition from this supreme white society is Janet Miller. Janet Miller is the â€Å"tragic mulatta† of the story as she is shunned by her half white sister, Olivia. Early in the novel Janet expresses that she, â€Å"would have worshipped this sister, even afar off, had she received even the slightest encouragement,† (Chesnutt 85). At this point, Janet wanted the same acceptance as her â€Å"equals† like Sandy or Mammy Jane, however, she is a product of slavery and would serve as a reminder to everyone that a white man entered willing relations with an African American woman. Her character also serves as a question of legal marriage between a white man and an African American woman that the Carterets refused to recognize until it was too late. It shows the corruption of how a white society is willing to deny rights to an heiress on the basis that she is black. The act of burning the legal d ocument that gave Janet the credibility she longed for her whole life was stripped from her by Olivia. She did it cold heartedly and only regretted the act until she realized her dilemma of morals and values versus legalities. By the end of novel we see Janet’s feelings toward acceptance and recognition altered from before as she learns the true nature of her sister and white society. The words between the two sisters arouses mixed feelings of emotion from both characters and leaves the readers vexed by the unresolved ending posed to them by Chesnutt. In Janet’s speech to Olivia she fervently states, â€Å"For twenty-five years I, poor, despicable fool, would have kissed your feet for a word, a nod, a smile. Now, when this tardy recognition comes, for which I have waited so long, it is tainted with fraud and crime and blood, and I must pay for it with my child’s life!† (Chesnutt 246). The readers can see the complete turnaround of emotion in Janet towards her longing for acceptance. She no longer feels ashamed or out of place. She was able to establish her own identity as a wife and mother, and found her role outside of the white society she was always peering into. Janet found the true characters of her sister and her society and found it to be something she and her husband can never be a part of. Chesnutt further represents these feelings of resentment and disgust for their white supremacy society with Janet stating, â€Å"I throw back your father’s name, your father’s wealth, your sisterly recognition. I want none of them,† (246). This is a bold statement on behalf of the African American community that Chesnutt poses, yet, the vexation has not presented itself. He continues by Olivia giving Janet the power to save the child’s life. Some readers could interpret that this is a kind hearted gesture from Olivia in giving Janet the power in this situation over her beloved child. One could argue that she truly did have a change of heart at the end of the novel, however, the readers never get to see if the ultimate outcome of the situation. We will never know if Dodie is saved and the two families unite and overcome their differences in an effort to integrate society peacefully. Chesnutt himself did not come to this conclusion because he ended the story with Dr. Miller walking in the room with intentions to save the child. Even Chesnutt could not create a fictional world where blacks and whites can overcome their differences and assimilate into society as one. While Chesnutt never expressed his personal solution to this problem of how to integrate whites and blacks into this fictionalized society of The Marrow of Tradition, he published an article â€Å"The Future American† on these matters afterwards. In the article Chesnutt suggested, â€Å"that evolutionary development in human existence in fact dictated the disappearance of American Caucasians as a racial group,† through the process of miscegenation (279). We can see how he integrated this mixing of races into The Marrow of Tradition through his suspected and verified mixed race characters. Janet’s racial status was confirmed as the tragic mulatta, however, other characters such as Tom Delamare and Sandy are suspected to be of mixed race. They looked so much alike, that Tom was able to pass as Sandy in the cakewalk and was â€Å"identified† by several people on his way home. Furthermore, Mr. Delamare appears to favor Sandy over his legitimate son Tom because Sandy has inherited all the qualities of a gentleman that you bestow to a son. Chesnutt himself identifies himself as mixed race and to be legally black by most state laws during his era. With all of the above in mind, it is not hard to see how Chesnutt would come to this conclusion, however, modern day readers know this was not the solution to integrating whites and blacks. Another character that illustrates this impossibility of integration is Dr. Miller. He is conflicted by his own standing as a black man who is considered one of the most qualified doctors in his region. He does not identify with his fellow African Americans nor does he feel a longing to be a part of this corrupted white society surrounding him. This conundrum leaves him drifting between these two societies. This is expressed on his train ride as he is watching â€Å"his people† having a good time before he becomes uncomfortable and annoyed by their activities. He later states that, â€Å"these people were just as offensive to him as the whites in the other end of the train,† (Chesnutt 82). He does not belong to any group other than that of his family and practice. Unfortunately, his hospital is burned to the ground, his child is murdered, and once again white supremacy is withholding what is legally his. Mr. Delamare’s attorney purposefully hides the will giving a sum of money to Dr. Miller for his hospital. This is absolute corruption that Dr. Miller wants no part of, but at the same time leaves him with few options that Chesnutt does not explore. Miller becomes a crucial part of Chesnutt’s dilemma as he, â€Å"intensifies his point by showing that besides being subject to continual humiliation in social circumstances, even the Millers’ professional accomplishments are vulnerable to the moods of white society,† (Reilly). They will never be accepted because they blur the lines and no longer fit into the predetermined boxes that society has cut out for them. The Millers become a threat to white supremacy. Chesnutt’s fictional representation of post-reconstruction society is corrupt, cruel, and mind washed with the ideas of white supremacy. It hinders progress and integration because African American characters are unable to break social and racial barriers without the threat of lynching or humiliation. It is keeping them stuck in the southern social hierarchy as a second class citizen. As a result, Chesnutt has created this integration dilemma by his own doing to the point that he leaves his readers with a serious problem unanswered. It is important to note this because it shows the severity and complexity of the problems people were faced with at the time. Even the most intellectual figures did not have solutions as to how to integrate society. Dial up connections are not as reliable and are slower so information being sent will be limited due to connection speed of dial up. * There should be a centralised database put into place. This is where all the companys data is held in one place and the computers in the company are networked. This central database can be used by anyone within the company provided they have been given access through a password. This will be a very resourceful way of storing company data, as it will prevent the problem of data duplication. * Sales based ordering where automatic re-ordering takes place of goods from the warehouse using the sales information from the checkouts. * To increase the efficiency of communication between the supplier and GO4IT sports I would recommend the introduction of EDI (electronic data interchange); the system is similar to email and allows users to exchange invoices, delivery notes, orders and receipts over the telephone network. Benefits of using new technology EDI Advantages * It is much faster, as work does not have to be printed, it is on the screen * The EDI system is easy to use and work can be sent off very easily * Information can be sent to other companies, in less then a few minutes instead of days. * The company can be linked up with their bank, suppliers and customers. * Will minimize the amount of paperwork and business can be transacted much faster and more efficiently then is possible through the normal post. Disadvantages * For EDI, computers are relied on, therefore if the systems go down; it will have a huge of affect on the company. * It is very costly for the installation of EDI * The organization has to research into which system would be best for the company Ecommerce Advantages * Majority of the work of GO4IT sports can be done just through the internet, making it much easier. * This would means a lot less people will have to be employed this will result in huge savings for the company as most transaction will be electronic. * Currently GO4IT sports uses a lot of time to get into contact with suppliers by using the telephone, which can be tedious due to the telephone being engaged; by using e-commerce orders could be automatically electronically sent straight to the suppliers. * Team contacts currently have to post the payment to the company, which is very time consuming and not very secure and with using ecommerce an electronic funds transfer could be made. * Promotion of the company can be improved as it is all online presentation of online advertising can be enhanced. * This will also enable the company to advertise their products online and also allow customers to purchase the products directly from the site using their debit/credit card. They can place the desired items in the virtual shopping trolley. The company can be fully based on the internet, making it easier for the company and also for customers. Disadvantages * A close relationship between the retailer and supplier is required in order for the system to work * Returning products online will prove to be difficult. The customer may be put off when these areas are taken into account. As the customer will question how to send the goods back to their source? Who pays for the return postage? Will the refund be paid? Will I be left with nothing? How long will it take? Compared to offline experience of returning goods to a shop and it is frustrating for the customer. * Privacy, security, payment, identity, contract. Many issues arise privacy of information, security of that information and payment details, whether or not payment details (eg credit card details) will be misused, identity theft, contract, and, whether we have one or not, what laws and legal jurisdiction apply. â€Å"Belonging is not simply about the well-being of an individual. Belonging allows humans to overcome great obstacles and moments of adversity†. Every human being possesses the urgent need to belong, to gain the strength of others and to fit into society. It is in our basic nature, our history supporting the human will to belong, as tribes were formed, urban environments assembled and modern societies bringing individuals into a group as one. A sense of belonging gives us the strength to move forward, the mental and physical support of others and allows us to feel accepted. Sunny Abberton’s documentary Bra Boys depicts the impact of belonging along with the obstacles his family and friends faced. A film conveying the struggles within the Maroubra area in the 80s/90s, that allows us to experience the connections made within the Bra Boys â€Å"surf gang† and the challenges that they are faced with. The Bra Boys demonstrate that a sense of belonging can in fact impact us to overcome great challenges, and that no matter how dire your situation, there will always be somewhere for you to belong. Humans are faced with tests throughout their lives, some more fortunate than others. In the Maroubra community it seemed most of the kids had grown up in uncomfortable situations, most of the Bra Boys parents being drug users, alcoholics, or violent. The Maroubra adolescent community seemed to have a dark lure hanging over it, violence and hardship following those who tried to belong. Gangs formed as a result and the streets became dangerous at night. â€Å"Growing up we had a lot of crazy things happen like guns held to our heads, chased down the street with people shooting at us, all sorts of things, but its good it turned us into what we are† admits Koby Abberton. One Bra Boys explains how he walked around the streets with a bat down his pants because you always had to be prepared for the worst when you were walking at night by your self. It was dangerous events like these that made Ma’s seem so safe, like nothing could ever hurt them there. Ma was the Abberton boys’ grandmother, a gentle and generous woman who opened her arms and home to all the young and struggling children associated with the Abberton boys. Most of these boys came from broken families, somewhere they  couldn’t really call home. Ma provided them with a place that was the next best thing to a home, a family of friends, somewhere that would bring the boys together into a brotherhood. They soon formed a group called ‘Ma’s hell team’ which was the beginning of it all, the beginning of the Bra Boys. Connections with people, places and the larger world can provoke a sense of belonging within ourselves, influencing where we search for meaning in our lives, and ultimately, where we belong. The Bra Boys forge connections amongst themselves by exploring each other’s passions and loyalty. It is ultimately the surfing community/beach life that brings the boys together. The beginning of the documentary presents the surfing culture, diving directly into the heart of these boy’s lives. The viewer is presented with live footage, magazine cover pages and newspaper articles to express the success and enjoyment the Bra Boys share towards the sport. Another scene featuring cross cutting strings together shots of the Bra Boy’s handshake, celebrating their literal connections to one another. The Bra Boys are all blessed with a passion of surfing, somewhere they could escape together, and without that place to free their minds and have fun sharing a hobby together, they may not have formed such sturdy bonds as they possess today. The connections we make determine how we grow and develop. Along with be being connected, acceptance has a large impact on our lives and wellbeing. Being a Bra Boy comes with responsibility, one being to accept your brothers and be there for them no matter what. Acceptance allows us to gain confidence in our lives. Without the fulfillment of fitting in human beings tend to grow lonely and feel as though they don’t belong. With that sense of approval, we can acknowledge ourselves and achieve more. Bra Boys is a documentary which greatly highlights the impact of being accepted within a certain community. Spending their days surfing and hanging out with friends, the bra boys allow us to appreciate the greater prospects of belonging. Koby Abberton, main Bra Boy, describes to the viewer how important their ‘gang’ is: â€Å"if one of the boys calls, no matter what you’re doing you come†. This depicts to us how strong and important their brotherhood is. The song â€Å"My Brothers Keeper† featured in the film, written by Jamie Holt, backs up a bond of brothers such as the Bra Boys. â€Å"My brothers, we are in  intertwined†¦. these ties shall bind us† is sung to describe the acceptance of one another and words how their ‘gang’ is literally bound to one another. â€Å"My Brothers Keeper† is also symbolized as tattoos across various Bra Boys chests. Bra Boys shows a great example of how important acceptance is in our lives and the pride it can bring to us. The Bra Boys demonstrate that that their group also accepts many multi-cultured or religious Australians. Cultural acceptance can be a huge issue within our society today. Cultures and religions can shape humans into what they believe to be their better self. There are many issues revolved around religions clashing or which god should be worshipped. No matter what you believe in or put your faith in we are all human beings and should find the strength to accept each other for who we are. Towards the end of the documentary an issue is displayed for the viewer, on such as the Cronulla race riots, brings to our attention a so-called â€Å"war† between Anglo Australians and Lebanese Australians. â€Å"One of the things ma taught us was to not judge people by how much money they had, or their skin colour, but by what type of person they were, perhaps it was ma’s wisdom that would prepare us for yet another dramatic turn in our beach community† say Sunny Abberton. Footage, images, narration and Police radio communication depict the violence that occurred. We are shown how the aggressive behavior in Cronulla makes its way to Maroubra, and how the Bra Boys gather to protect their community. After the attacks the Bra Boys decide to broker a peace deal between the warring factions. We are shown a 9 News interview where Sunny Abberton states â€Å"Maroubra’s had a very good relationship with the local Lebanese community here for around 10 years, we’re calling for calm on the beaches†. The Bra Boys wanted the ethnic community to feel accepted and wanted them to know that they did in fact belong at Maroubra beach, which is one of the most multicultural areas in Australia. The Bra Boys itself is filled with a number of different racial members, their powerful concept of belonging has transcended racial hatred. Bra Boys is a powerful documentary portraying many concepts of belonging. It shows us an authentic reality of how brutal life can be and that a group as strong as theirs can help to overcome such issues. No matter what they  faced, they had each other. They showed us how important a powerful bond is, and the positive impact a sense of belonging can make. Some of the Bra Boys say the surf saved them, some say Ma did, but ultimately, they saved each other.
